Traditional Crafts
This is an on-going side project where I am documenting the work of craftsmen across the UK. Some of which I had spent a lot of time with, and others I had only just met.
The Letterpress Collective
The Letterpress Collective was founded by Nick Hand in 2013 as a printshop for The Department of Small Works. Nick Hand has gathered together both wood and lead type as well as a collection of printing presses including a Heidelberg Windmill Platen, which is seen in these images. After the craft almost died out in the 1980's due to the rise in technology, there has since been a revival due to the allure and quality of hand-set type. As part of my documentary module at university, this project is focused on his apprentice, Ellen Bills. I plan to take this further and document different traditional crafts and crafters.
Alfred Harris Bookbinder
Whilst shooting with the Letterpress Collective, I had met Alfred Harris (pictured). He restores old books and binds new ones.
Welsh Wool
Whilst studying the Welsh Plains, Historians at USW, in Treforest, have discovered that Welsh wool was exported to the Americas and used to clothe enslaved people during the 18th century. Jill David (pictured) is a member of the community research group 'From Sheep to Sugar' and has managed to recreate this material using the traditional methods and dyes. She has also used wool from a certain breed of sheep found in mid-wales that would have been used during this period.

Ffwrnes Pizza
This was a project completed as part of a University Brief 'Day in the Life. Ffwrnes Pizza was first opened by two friends in 2014 and was based in a food van kitted out with a wood-fire oven, to which they make tradition wood-fired Neopolitan pizza. After rising in popularity, they won the Welsh Italian Food Award in 2017 and now have a permanent spot in Cardiff's Indoor Market. I spent six weeks with the Head Chef Antonio Nappa.
I have decided to include this body of work as they still use the traditional methods and recipes.
